Mormon Pioneer Trail

The determined Mormons ventured from the plains of Illinois to the promising landscapes of Utah, following this path around East Canyon. It was the tail end of a journey that spanned over 1,300 miles. One year prior, the Donner Party, a group of farmers in search of more fertile land, had initially charted this route. Numerous obstacles stood in their path on this arduous stretch, including high brush and rocks. The conditions were far treacherous they anticipated|only 47 of the original party of 87 reached their destination. Today, journey on this historic trail through East Canyon State Park. Walk, run, snowshoe, or cross-country ski along four miles of preserved trail. From Mormon Flat Campground, the trail climbs four miles to the top of Big Mountain located on Highway 65. From Mormon Flat Campground, view remnants of Fort Wells, a structure Mormon settlers built to protect the Salt Lake Valley after erroneous reports that troops would be sent to quell rebellious Mormons. The confrontation never materialized.

East Canyon Reservoir Overlook Trail

Try this 1.6-mile, out-and-back trail in East Canyon State Park. This easy route is great for a short hike or young explorers. Tromp through this trail on cross-country skis or snowshoes in the winter. Dogs must be on a leash.

Hogsback Summit “Heartbreak Ridge”

This spot marks a nexus where the Mormon Pioneer Trail, Pony Express National Historic Trail, and California National Historic Trail all cross. The divide is named for the unmistakable despair of the emigrants who upon reaching this spot, saw the jagged peaks and rough terrain of the Wasatch Mountains on the horizon. Heartbreak Summit is located along East Canyon Road outside of East Canyon State Park. This landmark is part of the Morgan County’s Self-Guided Auto Tour.

Pratt’s Pass Camp

Emigrants crossed the Weber River upstream and camped at the this mouth of the Main Canyon. Later they turned southwest, ascending the canyon to avoid the nearly impassible Weber River. This landmark is part of Morgan County’s Self-Guided Auto Tour.

Dixie Hollow

Nearby Dixie Springs and surrounded by a grove of trees, this campsite was a favored respite for emigrant groups. This landmark is part of Morgan County’s Self-Guided Auto Tour.

Canyon Creek

The Donner Party and later, the Mormons, set up campsites along this bend of the East Canyon Reservoir. The challenging terrain required the Mormons to make wagon repairs. This landmark is part of Morgan County’s Self-Guided Auto Tour.
